Cub Scout Pack 285 was originally chartered in February 1987 by the Zion Lutheran Church of Tipp City. At that time Boy Scout Troop #285 was in need of a Cub Scout Pack to help maintain its membership. The Troop eventually disappeared due to lack of leadership, but the pack remained. When the pack was first started it had only a handful of scouts. Through the years, membership within the pack has gone up and down. In 1998 membership started to increase dramatically and by 1999, Pack 285 was the largest Cub Scout pack in the Miami District. Due to the effectiveness of its leadership, parental volunteers and program they provide to the boys, Pack 285 continues to be a positive Scouting force in Tipp City with membership over 50 Cub Scouts and registered adult leaders as we move into the 2009 - 2010 charter year.

In February 2001, Pack 285’s committee started exploring the possibility of re-starting the Boy Scout troop to maintain the philosophy of Scouting in the boys after they crossed over from Cub Scouts. After many careful hours of research and intense consideration, the entire leadership of the pack voted to move the charter to the American Legion Post #586 and affiliate with Boy Scout Troop #586 which was still a young troop of only three years. The American Legion committee allowed the pack to keep the number 285 due to the fact we had just celebrated our fifteen year anniversary and they felt that the tenure was more important than the number.

The future looks bright for Pack 285 and Troop 586 as they grow together to become a Scouting tradition in Tipp City. Many of the pack leaders have become leaders, committee members and merit badge counselors for the troop to help continue the philosophy of Scouting as the boys’ transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. The pack and the troop together are committed to ensure that boys involved continue to develop the values, morals, and character, Scouting provides.
