What is Cub Scouts?
The goal of Scouting is to build character and help our kids grow in both physical and mental ability, to introduce new skills and activities and to have fun. The program is structured around family participation. Cub Scouting is a program outlined by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Parents and Leaders work together to:
• Influence each Scout’s character development and spiritual growth
• Develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship
• Encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body
• Improve understanding and communication within the family
• Strengthen skills in getting along with and respecting others
• Foster a sense of personal achievement by developing new interests and skills
• Provide fun and exciting things to do
• Encourage each Scout to "Do Your Best"
• Prepare each Cub Scout to become a Boy Scout
The Pack is a family based organization and is run by parents who volunteer as Den Leaders, assistants, and committee members or as planners for a special event. In order to successfully achieve the stated goals of Scouting, the involvement of all parents is needed. Please be prepared to volunteer for pack and den activities. Your participation benefits the boys in the Pack, the community, yourself and your own son.
What are some of the fun things we do?
We go camping at least twice a year. We visit lots of cool places like the Birds of Prey Center, the USS Yorktown, Kennedy Space Center, TV stations, power plants, and local fire and police stations. We go on outings like ice skating, mini golf, RiverDogs and Stingrays game. We learn all kinds of skills, play fun games, go fishing, build Pinewood Derby cars and race them, build rockets and launch them... and many other things!
How much does Cub Scouts cost?
Annual fee - $60. This fee includes BSA registration, mandatory insurance, a subscription to Boy's Life magazine, and pack dues.
Uniform - $60. (You can save by purchasing items from ebay. We also have a collection of used scout gear donated as scouts have
outgrown it. We may have something you can have for free!). Required uniform items are: Scout shirt ($24), patches for the shirt - Coastal Carolina Council shoulder patch ($5), "788" numerals ($4.50), and the BSA world crest ($2), neckerchief ($9) and slide ($6), scout belt ($10). Jeans or navy blue pants that you already own completes the uniform. A scout hat is optional.
Handbook - $11. Your scout will need a handbook for each rank. This is a guide to completing the required and optional achievements for advancing as a Cub Scout.
Uniform and handbook can be purchased at the scout shop in West Ashley or online. Here's the address and phone number of our local scout shop: 1025 Sam Rittenberg Blvd, Charleston, SC 29407 (843) 763-6132.
There are additional costs throughout the year for specific activities. For example, when we camp there's a fee for food and to pay for the camp site. This is typically $15 -$20 per camper.
