Brief History
Troop 121 was founded after three scout leaders, Mr. Larry Archer (then Cubmaster of Pack 6), Dr. Larry Lampton (former Scoutmaster of Troop 6),and Mr. Doug Callahan approached Fr. Charlie Pardee, then pastor of St. Thomas More Newman Center (a Catholic campus ministry on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia), with the proposal to start a new Boy Scout troop.In November 2000, a Webelos den had its first campout on the grounds ofHohn Scout Reservation in Laurie, MO, and formed the core group of Scouts for the new troop. In November 2001, St. Thomas More Newman Center was granted a charter by the Boy Scouts of America to form Troop121.
Regular Activities
Troop 121 meets in the Multipurpose Room of the Newman Center on 701 Maryland Avenue in Columbia MO every Tuesday at 6:30-8:00 PM, except in July and specified holidays. The troop goes camping every month based on a theme, and has consistently received the annual Quality Unit recognition since it began operation. While not excluding occasional attendance at other council camps, the troop supports the local council camps as its primary venues for longer-term summer camping.
The troop follows closely the national BSA program with its 3 aims(character development, citizenship training, physical fitness) using the following methods: Ideals (as spelled out by the Scout Oath, Law,Motto, Slogan), Patrols, Outdoor Programs, Advancement, Association with Adults, Personal Growth, Leadership Development, and Uniform.
Although part of the youth ministry at a Catholic Church, membership in the troop is open to all boys who meet the traditional qualification of the Boy Scouts of America.
