BERRY ROAD PARK
Berry Road Park is the “home” campground for Troop 440. The park is located on the site of the old Faber farm at the intersections of Berry and Ludlam Roads in the town of Monroe. The Town of Monroe purchased the Faber farm and some of the surrounding lands to set aside public land for the use of scout units and other outdoor groups.
Troop 440 was introduced to Berry Road Park by Jim Rogers, former Town Councilman and uncle of our previous Scoutmaster, David Rogers. Troop 440 became the first group to use Berry Road at our inaugural campout at the park. We created the large fire pit still in use today. Later improvements at the park came through Eagle projects. Candidate Dan Cardenas’ project included adding a large woodshed to the campground so we would always have dry wood, building a flagpole using downed trees on the property and cleaning out, enlarging and reinforcing the stone ring around the fire pit. Candidate John Hill’s project created a new marked trail on the property that features a 28’ bridge over a river that runs into Mombasha Lake.
Our Troop is proud to call Berry Road Park home and camp there several times a year. A new first for Berry Road happened in April 2014 when members of Troops 340, 440 and 540 gathered for the first Monroe Camporee. Scout skills were demonstrated and learned, games were played and lots of great food was eaten. It is our hope that this becomes an annual tradition to be shared amongst the Scouts and Scouter of the Monroe area.
