Thanks for checking us out; we're glad to see you. The Troop meets most Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the Smithville United Methodist Church located at 3005 Ferry Landing Road, Dunkirk, MD 20754. Guests are welcome to any meeting. If possible, let us know ahead of time so that we can give you and your scout our undivided attention. The Scouts of Troop 789 are friendly and accommodating and they love it when new or transferring Scouts stop by to check us out, so please feel welcome.
789 is an outdoor-centric troop dedicated to living the highest ideals and practicing the best methods of Scouting. We follow the tradition of leadership development that emphasizes the Scout-led troop and patrol method of organization. What this really means is that the boys are responsible for planning, organizing and implementing their own programs with the guidance of troop leaders to ensure that safety and the principles of Scouting are achieved. You can read more about that in our knowledgebase section. This separates the Boy Scouts from the Cub Scouts and Webelos where parents lead the activities. All humans develop the best skills through doing, failing and succeeding. Through trial and error Scouts build confidence that they can identify challenges, define solutions and overcome adversity.
We believe that the primary goal of Scouting is to develop confident, young leaders and to positively engaged citizens of our community. Of course, we encourage our Scouts to strive for the Eagle Scout rank and we support them in every way possible. The program is designed that each Scout is responsible for his achievements and his path to Eagle.
